What is a Canon CR2 (Canon Raw Version 2) file?

CR2, standing for Canon Raw Version 2, is a proprietary raw image format developed by Canon for its digital SLR cameras. Saved with the .cr2 extension, it records unprocessed 12-bit or 14-bit linear light data directly from the camera CMOS sensor.
